CHARLOTTE BRIMMING WITH LABOR DAY WEEKEND FUN August 28, 2013

The Queen City offers a variety of relaxing and exciting ways to celebrate Labor Day!

Charlotte’s tree-lined streets and beautiful parks will be brimming with Labor Day family fun activities and festivals!

Tucked between Charlotte and Monroe you will find the lovely town of Matthews. Matthews is a peaceful, historic community, right outside the excitement of Charlotte city limits, and will host its Labor Day weekend festival Matthews Alive! The festival runs August 30th-September 2nd. This family-oriented festival includes artisans, food, crafts and rides! The festival will benefit local, Matthews’ nonprofit organizations.

Holiday weekends deserve a parade! Charlotte’s Labor Day Parade is on September 2nd, beginning at 11am. The parade starts Uptown, at the Hal Marshall Center on North Tryon and 9th Street. Come cheer the parade participants and explore Charlotte’s Uptown!

The National White Water Center has its own Labor Day Celebration. Live music, fireworks, 5k Trail Race, Build Your Own Boat Competition and, of course, all the Whitewater usual heart-pounding fun like zip lining and rafting will fill your Labor Day with excitement. On 400 acres near the Catawba River, the Center will be sure to thrill!

If running a race sounds like too much work on a holiday, relax with the family Labor Day weekend at a Knights game! The Charlotte Knights are having their last game in Knights Stadium in Fort Mill on Labor Day! Next April, the Knights will be playing at BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte! Saturday, the Knights will play the Gwinnett Braves and fans can bid on signed baseballs. Sunday, the Knights play the Braves and after the game will be a final post-game fireworks show! Monday, September 2nd the gates open at 1:00 pm, as the Knights will host the Braves.

The beautiful, new Romare Bearden Park in Uptown Charlotte will have its grand opening Labor Day weekend! Children’s activities, music and art performances will be available at the park August 30th-Sunday, September 1st!

Also on Church Street will be Eat and Drink Your Art Out 2 at the Gallery @Packard Place on August 28. This fundraising event will have lots of local art for sale was well as local beer and munchies from Amelie’s.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE OFFERS EXCITING AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS August 19, 2013

KIDS LEAVING SCHOOL

The start of the school year in Charlotte is always a busy time for families! New schedules, shopping for school supplies, arranging car pools or scrutinizing bus schedules is all a part of the rush of a new school year.

Then, there is the after school worries!

Working moms and dads often have the uncomfortable decision of what to do when school ends and their child is still young enough to need supervision.

South Charlotte offers many options to worried parents with after school opportunities for kids!

The local YMCA offers terrific after school programs that often include transportation! The Harris YMCA and Morrison YMCA in Ballantyne offer programs five days a week until 6-6:30. Not only do your kids have a safe, friendly environment to complete homework, but they can also participate in activities like Zumba and Mad Science!

Kids’ Club in Blakeney is owned and operated by Tricia Cothman. Knowing that a former , Char-Meck assistant principal and a 4th term State Representative is the owner and operator of Kids’ Club should be reassuring to all nervous parents! Kids’ Club is an hourly, drop-off care facility for kids ages 2-10. Weekday hours are great: M-TH 8:30-8:30 and Fridays 8:30-10:00!

 

If your child is happiest when participating in the arts, South Charlotte offers classes for your blossoming Van Goughs and Meryl Streeps! Small Hands Big Art on Ardrey Kell Road offers classes for younger children as well as 9-14 year olds. Students learn about famous artists and elements of art while exploring their individual creative processes. Most classes in the 9-14 age range begin at 3:45.

Your precious drama queens and kings can enjoy expressing themselves at Drama Kids at Elevation Blakeney on Blakeney Professional Drive. School age kids 5-18 years old can learn dramatic elements from speech to dramatic movement and improvisation.

 

Little engineers in Charlotte may want to investigate Bricks 4 Kidz, a Lego themed after school program offered at many South Charlotte private and public schools. Kids learn to build everything from motorized vehicles to famous buildings.

 

The Jewish community Center on Providence road in South charlotte offers a J-Team after school program for kids K-5! Academic, creative and recreational activities will keep your young ones active and safe after school until 6:00pm! The J-Team even offers pickup from local elementary schools.
